Renal Transplant Program

UNM Hospital Transplant Services

Led by a team of Urological Transplant Surgeons and Transplant Nephrologists, the University of New Mexico has been performing adult and pediatric kidney transplants for over 30 years and has completed more than 1100 kidney transplants since its opening in 1977. Annually, the Transplant Center receives approximately 200 pre-transplant referrals, sees over 1800 patients in the post-transplant clinic and follows almost 700 individual transplant patients.

The UNM transplant program also offers laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for living kidney donors. This is a minimally invasive surgery that results in shorter hospital stay, less pain and scaring for the donor, and importantly, better outcomes for the recipient.

The Transplant Center is located on the second floor of the main Hospital and is staffed by an experienced, multi-disciplinary team composed of Physicians, Transplant Nurse Coordinators, Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers, Dieticians, and a host of specialized support staff.
