From the Chair

For years, University of New Mexico Eye Clinic physicians have been restoring the vision of New Mexicans through compassionate eye care. As the only university medical school in the state, our faculty has been intensely involved with building our next generation of physicians and preparing them to provide state-of-the art eye care to our patients. Our scientists are engaged in understanding the molecular mechanisms of prevalent diseases like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Their discoveries are getting translated into new therapies.

    • Our Telemedicine program reaches out to the community to serve those who have limited access to our specialized ophthalmic services.
    • Our talented faculty member, Linda Rose, MD, PhD, dedicates her career to training medical students to learn skills for better understanding eye diseases in the context of primary care through the Community Vision Project.
    • Our scientists and physicians have done ground-breaking work on molecular mechanisms that explain retinal vascular leakage beyond the conventional pathway and focuses on a novel molecule that is now being targeted in a new clinical trial in diabetic macular edema.
    • Our clinicians are working on expansion of the needs of our community by providing new diagnostic tools of electrophysiology in inherited retinal diseases and neuro-ophthalmology.
    • Our surgeon, Rachel Davis, MD, offers the innovative, minimally invasive therapy or “blebless” glaucoma surgery for people of New Mexico.
    • Our dedicated team of researchers is exploring the mystery of blindness in inherited photoreceptor diseases.

I am proud of our faculty and staff for their commitment and dedication to deliver excellent eye care and their achievements in education and research. Together, we hope to continue our efforts in serving the New Mexicans and advancing the frontiers of eye care.
