UNM Department of Surgery

UNM General Surgery Residency Program

Welcome to the University of New Mexico General Surgery Residency Program. Our program is a fully accredited program that is approved to graduate 6 chief residents per year. We pride ourselves on having a comprehensive clinical training program with a high operative volume that treats a diverse population with a broad spectrum of diseases.

University Hospital is New Mexico's only Level 1 trauma center and NCI Cancer Center. Our program is strong in many surgical disciplines including trauma/critical care, acute care surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, oncologic surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, burn and plastic surgery. We tailor the training of our residents to suit their interests.. Residents have been able to pursue additional training during their residency including dedicated research fellowships and critical care fellowship as well as obtain additional degrees (MPH, MBA).

Residents rotate to a variety of hospitals including UNM Health Sciences Center, Albuquerque Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Sandoval Regional Medical Center in Rio Rancho. We also have the unique opportunity of rural surgery, having partnered with Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 2015. Residents get additional exposure here to orthopedics, urology, and obstetrics and gynecology in addition to general surgery. Our goal is to prepare surgeons for a wide range of careers. We have graduates who have continued directly into private practice general surgery as well as into advanced surgical fellowships. I invite you to view the page with the destination of our recent graduates. Additionally, we have any excellent board passages rate with 100% first time pass for the Qualifying Exam since 2012.

I look forward to helping you achieve your career goal!
