Varicose Vein Prevention

How Do Varicose Veins Work?

Varicose Veins are enlarged, often swollen, veins that are visible just beneath the skin’s surface. A person can develop varicose veins if their blood does not flow steadily and circulation is hindered. Varicose veins typically form in the lower extremities of the body, and there are ways to help prevent them from happening.

Varicose Vein Prevention

It is important to take care of your vascular health to prevent future medical conditions such as Pulmonary Embolism (PE) or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Here are a few ways to prevent varicose veins, naturally:

  • Get plenty of exercise.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Take care of your liver.
  • Take care of your lungs.
  • Increase intake of Vitamin C and flavonoids.

If you are already experiencing varicose veins, there are ways to help them heal that UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center in Albuquerque recommends:

  • Elevate your legs.
  • Try compression stockings.

Our center can also treat varicose veins with various minimally invasive techniques. Our board-certified vascular surgeons are present at every medical visit to provide an expert opinion as we educate you on your treatment options, which may or may not include surgery.
