Varicose Vein Pain

For most people, varicose veins are only a cosmetic issue that they are unhappy with. However, in some cases, varicose veins can actually cause serious pain and discomfort. UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center in Albuquerque, NM can reduce the look of varicose veins, and treat any pain and discomfort until it is gone.

What Causes Pain In Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when veins stretch and their valves quit working. The valves work to prevent the blood in your veins from flowing backward and pooling in the lower extremities. Many people get varicose veins as they age because the walls of the veins naturally weaken over time, however varicose veins can also affect pregnant women, obese people and others with medical conditions.

These types of veins usually appear in the legs and feet because standing and walking, as well as sitting with your legs crossed, varicose vein painincreases pressure on the veins. Pain symptoms you may experience with varicose veins include:

  • Aching, tender, heavy or sore legs
  • Burning feelings in your lower legs
  • Swelling in the ankles or feet
  • Skin ulcers in the lower leg near the feet or ankle
  • Itchy veins
  • Skin breaks or sores

Treatment and subsequent relief are possible for each of the pain symptoms listed above for varicose veins. UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center offers varicose vein consultations where our board-certified vascular surgeons will inspect the health of your veins and will go over treatment options to relieve the appearance and the pain.
