Spider Vein Causes

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias or angioectasias, are not a serious medical condition, however they can look unattractive and cause discomfort in the person affected by them.

There are many different causes that can increase a person’s risk for developing spider veins. Though there is more of a risk for females rather than males to have spider veins, both genders can experience them. Some causes include:

  • Obesity
  • Menopause
  • Birth Control Pills
  • Abdominal Pressures
  • Medical History of Blood Clots
  • Varicose Veins
  • Limited movement or mobility
  • Standing or sitting (with crossed legs) for long periods of time
  • And others

UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center offers vein screenings for varicose and spider veins which usually are accompanied by one another. At this screening, we will examine your vein’s health and discuss the various treatment options we can provide that may help your individual circumstances.
