Sclerotherapy

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive treatment that helps remove spider veins, reticular veins and small varicose veins. This vein treatment option is safe and relatively pain-free. With sclerotherapy, a sterile chemical known as “sclerant” is injected into your diseased vein causing it to inflame, harden and eventually be reabsorbed into the body. The body automatically re-routes blood circulation to healthy veins located deeper in the body to compensate for the loss of the diseased vein. This helps significantly reduce pain and discomfort sometimes associated with these problem veins:

  • Varicose Veins: These are thickened veins that often appear twisted and rope-like, causing pain and discomfort.
  • Reticular Veins: These veins are also known as “blue veins” or “feeder veins”, are bluish-greenish in color and found behind the knee. They can also feed into spider veins.
  • Spider Veins: These are thin, bluish-reddish spiderlike networks of veins that appear on the surface of the skin, usually on the legs, but sometimes on the face and pelvis also.

Sclerotherapy is a simple procedure that requires no anesthesia and can be performed in your doctor’s office at UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center in Albuquerque, NM.

Getting Sclerotherapy At UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center

When you get sclerotherapy at UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center, you can expect the procedure to last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how many spider veins and other veins need to be treated in a session. Our board-certified vascular surgeons sterilize the injection before beginning and have you lay comfortably with your legs slightly elevated. The doctor will then inject a chemical or a mix of chemicals into the vein using a very small needle. If you find the procedure unbearable at any time, please inform your doctor as this may be an indication of a greater problem.
