Laser Surgery

When veins begin to swell or bulge and cause a slight discomfort, they are called varicose veins. These vein issues do not have to be permanent. They can be treated using laser vein surgery and other treatment methods.

Is Laser Vein Removal Right For You?

Usually, incompetent veins are not a serious health problem. However, these veins can sometimes be painful and you may not like the way they look. UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center offers a free varicose vein screening to assess your incompetent vein and discuss your treatment options. During your consultation, our vascular surgeons may suggest laser varicose vein surgery, especially if your veins are sore or inflamed or if the skin is noticeably irritated.

Laser Vein Surgery: The Procedure

When you visit UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico for laser vein surgery, you will want to have someone with you to drive you home after the procedure. You will also want loose-fitting clothing to wear afterward. During the procedure, the doctor will numb the area where the catheter will be placed in your vein. To assist you with comfort in this minimally-invasive procedure, your doctor will also inject a numbing agent along the length of the vein being treated. Next, an ultrasound device will examine the vein to create an image on a display screen for the doctors to accurately assess the work that needs to be completed.

A small incision will be made in your skin and the catheter will be placed into the incompetent vein. A laser fiber will be inserted into the catheter that will heat up as the doctor slowly pulls out the catheter. This heat will cause the vein to close up and eventually shrink. You will not require any stitches for the incision as it is too small and unnecessary and the procedure should take less than an hour.

Superior Aftercare

UNM Vein & Cosmetic Center is dedicated to helping you find relief from the discomfort of varicose veins and finding confidence again with the way your veins appear. Our physicians may recommend you wear compression stockings or support hose to compress your legs for several days or weeks after your procedure. You may also be asked to include regular movement in your routine as you recover from the laser vein treatment. We will also schedule a follow-up visit using our ultrasound equipment to ensure the laser vein surgery was successful.
