Urology

Urinary Stone Disease

The Division of Urology at UNM delivers comprehensive treatment of urinary stone disease. We provide services at both UNMH and SRMC. Our experts perform minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques to manage stones of the kidneys, ureters and bladder.

Services offered to our patients include:

  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with renal access obtained at the time of surgery
  • Ureteroscopy
  • Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL)
  • Cystolithalopaxy
  • Observation for stone passage

Our specialists complete a thorough metabolic evaluation to offer medical therapy for stone disease in conjunction with our nephrology specialists. With 24-hour urine analyses and blood tests we develop prevention strategies tailored to individual patients. Our patients receive a better understanding of why their kidney stones develop and what lifestyle and dietary changes they can make to prevent them. This allows for prevention and reduction in stone episodes for our patients.
