Originally derived from the Greek word “plastikos” meaning to mold and reshape, plastic surgery is a specialty which adapts sound surgical principles to the unique needs of the individual patient by remolding and reshaping tissue. Plastic surgeons are not limited to a given organ system, region of the body, or age group; thus plastic surgery is best described as a specialty devoted to the restoration or creation of the best function of a part of the body with a superior aesthetic appearance. Plastic surgeons emphasize the importance of treating the patient as a whole. Whether dealing with disfigurements or scarring as a result of trauma or cancer treatment, or performing cosmetic procedures to enhance and recontour the body and face, plastic surgeons take into consideration both the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.

The scope of plastic surgery is extremely broad. It includes congenital anomalies of the head and neck such as clefts of the lip and palate, maxillofacial trauma (soft tissue injuries of the face and/or fractures of bones of the jaw and face), facial tumor resection and reconstruction (most commonly skin cancers), microvascular surgery (the connection of blood vessels of one millimeter or less in diameter to move large pieces of tissue from one part of the body to another), burn scar reconstruction, breast reconstruction and reduction and cosmetic surgery (face lifts, breast enlargement, nose surgery, body sculpting, etc.).
