Endocrine Surgery Program
Endocrine surgery includes operations involving the thyroid gland and parathyroid glands. The most common indication for endocrine surgery is a diagnosis of thyroid cancer (papillary thyroid carcinoma, follicular carcinoma, medullary carcinoma) or high calcium levels (hypercalcemia). UNM is the tertiary referral center for the entire state of New Mexico and also attracts patients from neighboring states as well.
There are four fellowship-trained head and neck oncologic surgeons at UNM all with specific expertise and training in endocrine surgery. This is a high-volume center with more than three hundred endocrine cases performed every year. Our surgeons are highly experienced and capable of performing the full range of endocrine surgery including total thyroidectomy, central neck dissection, lateral neck dissection, mediastinal dissection, tracheal resection and reconstruction, parathyroid exploration, and parathyroid auto-transplantation.
